BALDING: A WOMAN’S NEW CONCERN

Beverly Hills, CA – January 12, 2006 – It is a fact that one in four women will experience hair loss in their lifetime! Once thought of as only a man’s issue, more than 30 MILLION women in the United States ARE struggling with hair loss. Because of this startling fact, Board Certified Hair Restoration Surgeon, Dr. Craig L. Ziering has launched a new program that focuses exclusively on the hair loss needs of women, aptly named "Ziering For Her."

"The truth of the matter is that female hair loss is much more common than once thought," said Dr. Ziering, founder and medical director of nationally recognized Ziering Medical. "However, most women suffering from hair loss feel trauma and embarrassment and attempt to conceal it with wigs and hats, not knowing that there is a permanent solution in hair restoration surgery."

According to Dr. Ziering, women can begin to loose their hair as early as the age of 20 and there are several reasons why it occurs. Dr. Ziering states that although certain diseases (ie, alopecia areata, etc.) and genetics are the primary reasons for female hair loss, surprisingly, hair styles and trends do too. Women who wear their hair in tight ponytails, cornrows, buns, chignons, twists, and other styles that pull on the scalp for prolonged periods can result in irreversible hair loss, a medical condition known as traction alopecia. This condition is highly prevalent among African American women, and East Indians, groups that are more likely to use chemical straighteners and braid their hair on a regular basis.

Another growing trend Dr. Ziering sees in his multiple practices across the United States is women concerned with thinning or disappearing eyebrows due to over plucking. The same surgical technique used on the hair line can be used to restore eyebrows as well.

During a "Ziering for Her" consultation, the patient is first educated on how common female hair loss is, allowing the patient to not be so embarrassed by their own condition. Then, Dr. Ziering examines and sensitively diagnoses each patient’s individual situation so they can formulate a surgical plan based on her needs. There are various non- surgical options available to balding women including Rogaine for Her which can help curtail female hair loss and products such as Toppik which helps camouflage thinning hair. Although, Dr. Ziering stresses that the state-of-the-art unique microscopic follicular unit hair restoration surgery is the only permanent solution, for some patients non-surgical options are the first step.

"Female hair loss is a very sensitive subject that has not been discussed at all," adds Dr. Ziering. "I hope with 'Ziering For Her,' we can open the doors of communication and let the 30 million women struggling with hair loss in the U.S. know that there is a way to regain a full head of their own of beautiful hair!"
