African American
Many African Americans don’t think that they are good candidates for hair transplant procedures because of their skin color and the unique quality of their hair. This is a long standing myth. In fact, the curly character of most African American hair gives the African American hair transplant patient a real surgical advantage because that “curl” creates the appearance of more density or more hair.
Hair loss in African Americans is mostly attributed to the same genetic factors of other ethnic groups except in cases of hair loss from severe or prolonged hair styling like weaves and braiding which often causes Traction Alopecia. Traction Alopecia is the most common African American surgical hair restoration procedure Dr. Ziering performs. He is very experienced with the history and diagnosis of all conditions and causes of hair loss in African Americans.
With African American surgical hair restoration, special attention is given to harvesting the donor strip and dissecting the individual follicular units. Since the hair typically curves in a “C” shape below the surface of the skin, meticulous attention and experience with this hair type are critical in order to preserve the integrity of the follicular units and ensure their survival. Every step of this procedure from dissecting these grafts to making recipient sites and placing the grafts is more time consuming due to the color and turger of the skin as well as the curl of the hair, but the extra time required is worth it because it translates directly into excellent results and extremely happy patients. Because Keloid scarring may be a concern and issue with African American skin, additional skin testing may be required to assess how well your skin heals.
Having performed over 1000 hair transplant procedures for African Americans, Dr. Ziering is very familiar with the unique grooming habits , styles and hair care products used by African Americans, and he is keenly versed on the shapes and lines of the hairline that are ethnically appropriate and socially desired. He considered by many to the most authoritative and experienced hair transplant surgeon for black patients.
