Hair Transplant Procedure
Hair Transplantation is the only permanent solution for hair loss. During hair transplant surgery, you are both the donor and the recipient during the procedure with hair being removed from the donor zone in the back of your head where your hair is genetically programmed to grow for life and being transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp.
There is a step-by-step process for all procedures with the biggest difference being the choice of the donor hair harvesting technique. At Ziering, we perform both FUT Strip Harvest and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures.

Step One: Donor Harvesting
The donor zone is identified and prepared for harvesting. There are two basic methods of harvesting your donor hair:
- FUT Strip Harvesting in which a strip of tissue is removed from your donor zone and then dissected into follicular units of 1 – 4 hairs using the Ziering Scope
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) in which grafts are harvested individually from the donor area and then trimmed under microscope. FUE options include:

Step Two: Microscopic Dissection of the Grafts by Your Personally Selected Tech Team
With FUT Strip Harvest procedures, the donor strip is placed under the Ziering Scope which is designed specifically for hair restoration surgery. Then the donor strip is dissected into individual follicular units of one to four hairs.
Step Three: Creation of the Recipient Sites by Your Ziering Surgeon
Your hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair transplant plan he has designed specifically for you. Step Four: Placement of the Hair Grafts by Your Personally Selected Ziering Tech Team
Finally, your hair grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp by a surgical technician who places each graft carefully and meticulously into those recipient sites. Surgical hair restoration is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia.
Transplanted hair goes through the same resting and growing phases of your normal hair. The hairs of the transplanted grafts will begin to grow at approximately 4 months after your procedure and will continue to grow through months 10 – 12 post operatively.

Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation (FUT)
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is performed using local anaesthetic.
A thin strip of donor hair is harvested from the donor area which is the region of hair on the back of the head. This hair is genetically programmed not to fall out. These hairs are permanent.
The donor strip is then placed under the Ziering Scope which is a microscope specifically designed for hair restoration surgery. The strip is then dissected into microscopic grafts of individual follicular units, of one to four hairs. This important step in hair restoration surgery must be precise in order to gain the best yield from your donor area. These precious grafts are placed in a cold, tissue storage and kept as such until they are meticulously placed in the recipient sites created by our hair surgeon.
Extreme attention is given to the exact angle and direction of each tiny recipient site in order to maximize the redistribution of your transplanted hair to achieve aesthetic and artistic density, meaning to give the most natural looking result and the greatest allusion of more hair.
In most procedures, the 1- hair grafts are placed in the frontal hairline and temporal peaks, the 2-hair grafts immediately behind the hairline grafts and the 3 and 4 hair follicular units are placed through central and forelock zones.

This may vary with Corrective Procedures where the repair of “old plugs” requires more creative design to soften the “pluggy” appearance of older surgical hair restoration techniques.
Surgical hair restoration patients are provided with a specific post-operative routine to follow for the first 10 days. After the procedure, if there is any discomfort related to the procedure it is normally treated with oral medications.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
Surgical hair restoration is a field of medicine that is constantly evolving as the result of physicians constantly seeking to meet the needs of their patients. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of obtaining donor hair for Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedures and one of those innovations that has been developed to give an alternative harvesting technique for patients who are looking for an option other than the traditional gold standard single strip method. Patients who are concerned about having a linear scar, who want to wear their hair very short or whose scalp is too tight for strip harvesting, are typically good candidates for FUE procedures. These are the patients that physicians had in mind when they were developing FUE as viable option and alternative.

Unlike the strip method in which only the precise donor strip is shaved and a linear incision made with the grafts being microscopically dissected from that strip, FUE requires that the entire donor zone be shaved and the follicular units are extracted directly from the scalp, one follicular unit at a time, which is a time and labor intensive process. The follicular units are taken from the known donor area by using a .8mm to 1mm punch, making a circular incision around the top of the follicular units and removing the follicular units directly from the scalp. Once the donor hair is harvested, the recipient sites are created by your surgeon and the grafts are placed with the proper angle and direction by the hair surgery technicians, as is with all follicular unit transplantation procedures.
Due to the extended length of time required to properly extract the follicular units, time for recipient site creation and graft placement may be proportionately decreased. This may shift the surgeon’s time and focus away from planning and designing recipient sites (the artistic component) to the donor area and the mechanical extraction of the follicular units unless the sessions are kept small or are done over several days in succession.
Follicular Unit Extraction Instruments
Follicular Unit Extraction instrumentation and techniques have evolved in recent years. The latest improvements have made FUE more viable, by offering instrumentation capable of harvesting more grafts with less damage and less scarring.
Recent improvements include:
- Smaller punches that reduce spotty scarring
- Motorized punches that refine the way Surgeons score the upper layer skin
- Restricted depth of scoring to better protect the follicular unit grafts
- Understanding the need to limit extractions in order to prevent obvious scarring
SAFE System for FUE
Ziering Surgeons utilise Dr. Jim Harris’s “SAFE System” instrumentation for Follicular Unit Extraction. The specially designed instrument is a motorized blunt dissection device.
- Isolates the follicular units from the surrounding scalp area
- Allows the Surgeon to extract follicular units directly from the scalp
- Minimises damage to follicles
FUE has moved forward with the latest technology and techniques and a good result can be achieved in the right patient, though it is certainly not the best option for all. The single strip harvest procedure used in Follicular Unit Technique transplantation remains the preferred method of graft harvesting for most patients.

Although he originally worked in family medicine, Dr. Varona decided to change the course of his career when he underwent hair restoration himself.
