Instrumentation for FUE Procedures
FUE instrumentation and techniques have been evolving for the past five years. Recent improvements have made FUE a more viable surgical option for select patients with the possibility of harvesting more grafts with less damage and less scarring. They include:
- Development of smaller punches that addressed and reduced the incidences of spotty scarring
- Development of motorized punches that refined the way the surgeons score the upper layer skin
- Limiting the depth of scoring so that naturally-occurring follicular units are not transected as often, improving survivability.
- Understanding the extractions from the donor area must be limited in order to prevent obvious circular scarring throughout that zone
At Ziering Medical the SAFE System for Follicular Unit Extraction is the instrumentation that all Ziering surgeons employ for FUE procedures.
FUE SAFE System
Invented by Dr. Jim Harris, The SAFE System, is a motorized blunt dissection device that builds and improves upon the foundation of previous FUE instruments. It is used to isolate the follicular units from the surrounding dermis, allowing the physician to extract follicular units directly from the scalp with minimal damage to follicles. The process of extracting the follicular units can take up to 3-5 hours for approximately 800 – 1200 grafts, which is an average size FUE case or longer for up to the maximum 2400 in one session. It is generally accepted that the maximum number of follicular units that can be extracted with FUE and not show visible signs in the donor area is around 5000 follicular units. This is achieved over multiple surgery sessions. If a patient needs more than 1000 grafts, the complete procedure may require more than one day of surgery. Additionally, to yield single hairs for hairline restoration, the extracted follicular units may be microscopically dissected to create single hair grafts. With the latest technology and techniques, a good result can be achieved, but the single strip harvest procedure remains the preferred method of graft harvesting for most patients.
